Three Free Gigs Last Night

(Reviews by John T).
Set off at teatime yesterday [Friday, Sept. 23] to do some shopping in ‘The Toon’.
By 6pm I was in need of refreshment which I found in the form of an excellent pint of Wylam Ale in the Redwood Bar of the Vermont Hotel where vocalist Andrea Pattison, her husband Richard Rutherford, on bass and Graham Don on piano kept me relaxed and entertained for a while
My needs, albeit temporarily, fulfilled I then made my way to the Prohibition Bar in Gateshead, whistling the theme from Get Carter as I walked over the High Level Bridge!
An audience of around 40 were in good fettle at the neighbourhood speakeasy for BUDTET who started on time. Not seen them before.  I seem to remember a previous line up coming to Ashington Jazz Club but I was on holiday and did not get to hear them.
Current line-up is: Jim Crinson - Double Bass. Eric Stutt – Drums. Lin Lee Wong – Piano. Jude Murphy - Alto Sax, Flute, Vocals. Fiona Finden - Soprano Sax, Vocals. Stuart Finden Tenor SaxSpecial Guest for the last few numbers – Dave Weisser on electric trumpet.
The Message, Moanin’, I Fall In Love Too Easily, Corcovado,  took us up to the break after which the band came roaring back with: This I Dig of You, Four on Six, Raindrops,  Juice (Ellington), Days of Wine and Roses, Yardbird Suite and Take the A Train.
I really rate this outfit – very professional. The 3 Saxes were perfect together and special mention must be made about Jude Murphy’s flute work. She employed a technic where she appeared to sing and play the flute at the same time. Heard this on records but never live
Made my way back for the last bus to Ashington via a very crowded  Hoochie Coochie to what wasn’t a disco but, actually,  was a seven-piece band (Federation of Disco Pimp – last heard here in June with Pee Wee Ellis). Look out for BUDTET at this venue soon.
John T.
