King Bee @ Hoochie Coochie - July 3

Dave Wilde (ten/bar/fl/vcl); Richard Burns (tpt); Chris Jelly (vbs); Mark Hand (keys); Steve Glendinning (gtr); Dan Brady (bs gtr); Jonathon Marriott (dms).
(Review by Lance).
New faces, new material, new CD (launch imminent), old excitement!
No trombone, no percussionist, new drummer - whether this was permanent or temp I don't know - but the musical temperature remained the same and that was way above boiling point.
The solos sizzled - how could they not with these guys?  Chris Jelly, whom I'd back in a vibraphone carve-up against any other UK (and further afield) mallet man, has added a new gizmo to his machine that, he told me, makes for a better sound balance and, he said ominously, also has a midi feature enabling him to replicate any instrument. Fortunately, those mystical powers weren't unleashed and it was left to Moogist Mark to produce the Martians have landed sounds. Chris did, however, produce sounds that were out of this world but, then again, doesn't he always?!
Not that this was a one man show - how could it be with these guys? Dave Wilde was as frantic as his surname implies on tenor yet allowed sanity to prevail on flute.
New dad Richard impressed - he had no choice but to pull out all the stops what with him having friends from "Down Under" in the house.*
Steve Glendinning, as always, displayed his virtuosity, Brady stoked the fire down in the engine room with new drummer (or was he depping?) Marriott turning on the heat.
The crowd applauded, they danced, they drank and they made merry which is what a King Bee gig is all about. Long may they reign.
Lance.
*Jenny and her appropriately named husband Lucky!
