CD Review: Keith Jarrett - Creation

Keith Jarrett (piano)
(Review by Russell)
Following his 2014 worldwide concert performances pianist Keith Jarrett selected the most revelatory episodes from six concerts and sequenced them, effectively creating a new concert. In other words this new release on ECM is a collection of the best bits of Jarrett’s gigs during last year. Its issue marks the pianist’s seventieth birthday (8 May).
Nine pieces across six performances on three continents, Creation, with a total running time of 72 minutes and 30 seconds, is typical of Jarrett the solo artist. Parts one to nine (Roman numerals I-IX for gravitas) were, no doubt, created on the best pianos on Earth (nothing but the best for Mr Jarrett). Part I sets the tone; referential silence broken only by Jarrett’s vocal harmonising with his keyboard inventions. Parts II and III observe an unremitting funereal pace with suggestions of Bach, then, perhaps, a familiar ballad, no sooner lost in the ether. Other parts offer more of the same.
Location – Paris, Rome, Tokyo, Toronto – of significance to the artist (one assumes), to the listener, of no importance. Creation documents Keith Jarrett’s concert performances during 2014. This ECM release is one for the piano student. Keith Jarrett’s Creation is on ECM 472 2298.
Russell.
