Jazz Co-op @ The Globe: Anita’s New Voices: May 10

Robin Aspland (piano); Paul Grainger (bass); Tristan Mailliot (drums)
Anita Wardell (introductions/ tutor) New Voices as below.
(Review by Ann Alex).
As mentioned in the review of last night at the Globe, off I went back to the Globe today to savour the results of the Anita Wardell workshops.  I wasn't disappointed, I enjoyed the performance thoroughly.  I am unable to give the usual sort of review as most of the singers are my friends from other jazz singing courses and it would be unfair to single out any individuals. But goodness, they all appeared to be brimming with confidence and they said they’d loved the course.
The benefits were obvious, every person was acting out the meaning of the songs with confident singing and a professional appearance.  Ms Wardell congratulated them all and reminded them that they could all sing well. The Co-op hopes to repeat the workshop next year.
Each person did one song, giving a very varied programme, including, Stormy Weather; Good Morning Heartache; If You Never Come To Me; Nobody Loves When You’re Down And Out; Body And Soul; My Way and 2 or 3 Bebop numbers whose titles I wasn’t sure of.
Singers included David Edgar; Barry Keatings; Jen Errington; Kath Jobes; Helen Neilson; Jenny Lingham; Debra Milne; Mary Wrightson. There was also Trish and another lady and gentleman whom I didn’t know, nor did I catch their names.  Readers must excuse me as I wrote no notes until afterwards, I was too busy listening.  Hope I haven’t missed anyone out totally.
So what happens now? A little bird has hinted that there could well be more performances at the Globe from these singers as individuals with various musicians.  The bird also reminded me of next Saturday’s (16th May) gig at the Globe, The Blue Jazz Sextet, with guest singers (see above) Barry Keatings and Helen Neilson.  Be there or you’ll miss a treat!
Ann Alex
