James Harrison, Ian Simpson and Friends at The Jazz Café - November 1

James Harrison (pno); Ian Simpson (gtr). + David Gray (tpt/tmb); Kathryn Lowdon (vcl).
(Review by Kath J).
A night out with my pal Kathryn Lowdon, we popped into the Jazz Café to hear a Saturday night duo of James Harrison and Ian Simpson… but this was to be a night of surprises, with several friends being asked to join the guys over the course of the evening.   I had no plans to review this evening, but by the end, I thought it deserved something appropriate to go on the blog, so I snaffled James’s set list so that I could relay the tunes played with some accuracy… although I have to be honest and say it would be difficult for me to pick out solos… they were all fab, and my memory ain’t that good!

Move Along set us away, quickly followed by Well You Needn’t and There Will Never Be Another You. The skill of these talented young musicians is evident, and it is not surprising that they play so well together; these boys having recently completed a 3 year music degree together.  They were joined numerous times during this first set by David Grey who displayed his talents on both Trumpet and Trombone during several of the tunes and was a delight to hear.  The remaining tunes in the first set were:  I Won’t Last A Day, St James Infirmary, St Denis, Obsession, Midnight Blue and It’s a  Funk Thing .

Set two commenced as the lads went on to Pass the Peas, a couple of well-known standards, Lady Be Good and One Note Samba were skilfully executed before  Belinda Voshtina joined in them to sing  Manhã de Carnaval (A Day in the Life of a Fool)  in her mother tongue.  Next came The Chicken, and David Grey popped up again to play along In a Mellowtone, Affirmation and the last number of the night, “a blues thing” displaying improvisation at its best from all of the musicians plus Kathryn Lowdon, who surprised the audience with her powerful bluesy soulful voice… wow what an end to a really enjoyable night!
